چکیده

This paper will be a comparative analysis of those two leading data link layer protocols, Ethernet and ATM, which are currently being used in local cable systems worldwide. These two protocols will be evaluated to determine technical (network architecture), management (network management) and the financial costs (economics) of implementing each. Which protocol will emerge as the primary protocol for cable systems in the twenty-first century? This very question regarding the development of a primary cable protocol is currently being addressed by two standards setting bodies – IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) and MCNS (The Multimedia Cable Network System). The current development status regarding each of these two standards setting bodies will be key drivers in deciding which protocol best benefits cable systems and cable system vendors.

ATM Traffic Control in Hybrid Fiber-Coax Networks - Problems and Solutions

The IEEE 802.14 working group is currently standardizing a new media access control (MAC) protocol for the emerging Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) networks. Crucial for the success of 802.14 will be its ability to support higher layer tra c services, namely, ATM Constant Bit Rate (CBR), Variable Bit Rate (VBR) and Available Bit Rate (ABR) tra c classes. In this study, we investigate the inter-operatio...

Two Broadband Technologies Coexist on the Same Hfc Network

This study aims to explore how the multiple system operators of cable television can remain their existing broadcasting advantages and cope with a strong, competitive telecommunications industry. As new and magnanimous data services are provided, multiple system operators, who have the last-mile advantage, are beginning to experience an increase in subscribers’ demands for bandwidth. First, thi...

Supporting Quality of Service in the Head - End of Hybrid Fiber - Coaxial Networks

Many cable operators have begun the process of upgrading their cable systems in anticipation of delivering a wide range of interactive digital services to the home. These newer hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) networks can take advantage of unused bandwidth in broadcast cable television (CATV) and allow for an inexpensive and simple way for home users to have access to many broadband digital applicat...

Adaptive MAC Protocol for a Cable Modem

Cable plants were initially designed for one-way broadcast communication (from the head-end to the neighborhood). They are now being upgraded to provide an upstream path (from the home to the head-end). New challenges arise in using the upstream channel since the available bandwidth is low and the noise levels are high. In this paper we present a MAC protocol especially designed to eeciently sh...

An Overview of Broad-Band Access Technologies

The provision of broad-band services based on either the Internet or the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technique requires a new generation of access networks. In the short term, solutions such as x-digital subscriber line (DSL) and hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC), allowing the reuse of existing infrastructures, look very promising. For the longer term, new infrastructures based either on radio or...
